How Do People Learn- May 21, 2016

I observed teachers at Cherry Hill Elementary. I noticed as I was helping work with small groups of students (2-3 at a time) as they worked on their assignments, that they are all very different in the ways they retained information. It was interesting watching even how they sat at their desks that some of them needed what the teacher called “bubbles” which were just rubber cushions for them to sit on to help them sit straight in their desks with their feet down so that they could concentrate on their work.
I helped some kids with their journal entries. I was there to help them with words if they didn’t know how to spell them, or with simple punctuation questions. I definitely noticed a difference in quality of work from the kids who were “visual” learners as opposed to the kids who were “auditory” or “kinesthetic” learners.
The teacher was very involved with the students as they did their work. She was walking around the room and looking over their shoulders to make sure they were doing well, and she made sure that they knew she was there to answer any questions that they had.
Another teacher that I observed was great about getting the children to be involved in class discussions. She chose a short video that she knew the kids had wanted to see and used that to introduce themes and storylines to the the kids.  The kids were excited about watching the short clip and in turn were excited to talk about the theme of the clip and the plot, etc.
